1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (22nd OCTOBER 1942)
On the Russian Front... The first snow of the season falls at Stalingrad as the Soviet 62nd army launches an unsuccessful counter-attack on the city's southern flank. General Vatutin takes command of Soviet Southwest Front in preparation for the major Operation Uranus counter-offensive.

In the Ukraine... At his Vinnitsa headquarters, in recognition of diminished chance of capturing facilities intact, Hitler orders the Luftwaffe to begin bombing oil storage depots at Astrakhan, Saratov, and Kamyshin.

From Britain... Convoy KMS 1G departs the Clyde for Gibraltar. RN task forces and convoys begin departing for Operation Torch. The age of military conscription is lowered to eighteen.

In the Red Sea... British vessel Ronaldshay sunk by Axis aircraft.

In the Atlantic... U-412 is sunk by Wellington bomber north of the Shetlands, but U-443 sinks British vessels Winnepeg II and Donax.

In Santiago, Chile... The Chilean government announces pro-Allied policy.

In the Pacific... Japanese artillery fire closes Henderson Field for most of the day, and Japanese forces probe US positions along the Matanikau on Guadalcanal, but the main offensive is postponed again.
IJN gunboat Hakkaisan Maru sunk by USN destroyers Mahan and Lamson.

In the Indian Ocean... British vessel Ocean Vintage sunk by IJN submarine I-72.

In Papua New Guinea... 2/12th Battalion of Australian 18th Infantry Brigade embarks at Milne Bay for landing on Goodenough Island. Australian 16th Infantry Brigade attack the Japanese rearguard around Eora on the Kokoda Track.

Northern France by RAF Fighter Command on military targets.
Bay of Biscay minelaying RAF Bomber Command.
Germany RAF Bomber Command sends 22 aircraft to attack Essen, the Ruhr, and other targets during daylight.

3. TODAY’S SELF-OBSERVATION
Sunday's Reiki share was a success, with the exception of one individual. It is inevitable that you cannot please everybody, and rather than waste energy on them, it's better to spend it where you are a hit. If you build, they will come, and be aware of the opposition and carry on anyway are my adopted philosophies.


It's important to get arse in gear at the beginning of the week and get things done, as that affects the flow of the whole week, so I will endeavour to do so!
