1. THIS DAY IN WW2 (11th October1942)
In the Pacific... The naval battle of Cape Esperance begins, between Savo Island and Guadalcanal. An American naval force under rear admaril Norman Scott intercepts a Japanese force under rear admaril Aritomo Goto. One Japanese cruiser and one destroyer are sunk, and Goto himself is mortally wounded. In the exchange of gunfire, one American destroyer is sunk and another badly damaged. Meanwhile a separate Japanese supply convoy successfully offloads at Guadalcanal.
Elsewhere German vessel Regensburg torpedoed by USN submarine Searaven in Sunda Strait and is run aground by its captain to prevent sinking. In the north Pacific, Soviet submarine L-16 mistakenly sunk by IJN submarine I-25.

In the Atlantic... British vessel Agapenor sunk by U-87, British vessel Waterton sunk by U-106, Panamanian vessel El Lago sunk by U-615.

In the Mediterranean... German vessel Una sunk by RN submarine HMS Unruffled.

In Papua New Guinea... Australian 25th Infantry Brigade attacking Japanese rearguard around Myola and Templeton's Crossing on the Kokoda Track.

In Madagascar... General Smallwood takes command of Allied forces on the island.

In the Arctic Ocean... Soviet vessel Musson is sunk by a mine.

Today's Air Raids...
Malta - the start of a major bombing offensive by the Axis.
Kiska - by US 11th Air Force
North Sea - minelaying by RAF Bomber Command.
Over France - Ground attacks by RAF Fighter Command
Gudalcanal - Fighter dogfighting - 11 Japanese and 2 American losses.

3. TODAY’S SELF-OBSERVATION
Though no harm was done due to yesterday's alarm-clock failure, the whole day was disrupted, and I got a lot less done than I hoped. However I tend to rate success by my relationships, and mine with Son and Missus are currently rock-solid, and indeed a source of utter joy. This is a particularly great achievement when you consider that one is a teenager and the other a paranoid-schizophrenic. Amazing what a combination of love, communication, rapport and some good antipsychotic medication can do.

4. TODAY’S QUESTION FOR YOU
Are you making the best use of what you have?

7. THE BEST OF MOCK THE WEEK
UNLIKELY THINGS TO HEAR AT THE WORLD CUP

8. TRIVIA
At 840,000 square miles, Greenland is the largest island in the world. It is 3 times the size of Texas. By comparison Iceland is only 39,800 square miles. Australia does not count as it is categorised as a continent.

9. THE WISDOM I’VE LEARNED FROM OTHERS
"Yesterday is a canceled cheque; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have, so spend it wisely."
