In the Pacific... RAAF Catalina aircraft attack Rabaul on New Britain with incendiary bombs
overnight and burn down much of the town. In retaliation, Troops of the Japanese 81st Naval Garrison execute 6 Allied prisoners of war
by rifle fire and
bayonet. A Japanese Army doctor is seen dissecting at least one of the six men
after the execution. Vice Admiral Jinichi Kusaka arrives to take command. On Guadalcanal, US 5th Marine Regiment attacking in the Matanikau sector. USMC fighters claim four victories above the island. The Japenese open a new forward fighter airfield at Buin on Bougainville Island. Japanese vessel Hague Maru sunk by USN submarine Drum off Honshu
In Papua New Guinea... Lead elements of Australian 25th Infantry Brigade attack Japanese rearguard between Myola and Templeton's Crossing on the Kokoda Track. 36 US B-17 Flying Fortress bombers moved from Mareeba airfield in
Queensland, Australia to Port Moresby. US 5th Air Force aircraft attack Buna and Japanese positions on the Kokoda Track.
In Belgium... Men and women are ordered to register for work to support the German war effort.
In the Mediterranean... Italian vessel Lupa No. 2 sunk by RN submarine Unbending.
In North Africa... US MEAF bombers attack Benghazi.
In the Atlantic... US vessel John Carter Rose sunk by U-201. British vessel Glendene sunk by U-125.
In the Aleutian Islands... US 11th Air Force aircraft attack Kiska Island.
In China... General Chennault writes directly to Roosevelt to request increased air support.
In the Indian Ocean... U-68 sinks four allied freighters, and U-159 sinks British vessel Clan Mactavish. U-172 sinks Greek vessel Pantelis. U-179 sinks British vessel City of Athens but is then spotted, rammed and sunk by RN destroyer HMS Active.
